Book Review - The Sky is Everywhere

The Sky Is Everywhere
The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
Release Date: March 9, 2010
Pages: 272

Summary: Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker, bookworm and band geek, plays second clarinet and spends her time tucked safely and happily in the shadow of her fiery older sister, Bailey. But when Bailey dies abruptly, Lennie is catapulted to center stage of her own life—and, despite her nonexistent history with boys, suddenly finds herself struggling to balance two. Toby was Bailey’s boyfriend; his grief mirrors Lennie’s own. Joe is the new boy in town, a transplant from Paris whose nearly magical grin is matched only by his musical talent. For Lennie, they’re the sun and the moon; one boy takes her out of her sorrow, the other comforts her in it. But just like their celestial counterparts, they can’t collide without the whole wide world exploding.

When I first starting hearing about this book on about a bazillion blogs, I thought there was no way this book could be that good. Every blogger I know raves about it. Suffice it to say, I had my doubts going in. There was so much hype around it, I knew I'd be let down.

OMG was I wrong. This book is everything everyone says about it and more. The characters are relatable, the writing is impeccable, the imagery is beautiful. I really can't say enough good things about this book. It is amazing.

I've never experienced the death of someone so close to me as Lennie did in the story, but somehow I was able to share in her grief. Even though what went on between her and Toby was completely weird, I understood. Like any good book, Jandy Nelson made me hate Lennie, then love her, then want to toss her into the river!

I swooned for Joe, who was probably the most refreshing character in the book. Imagine that, a teenage boy who just loves life, is happy to be living. You don't get that in many books because the emo, brooding type is so much more fun for the girl to fall in love with. Like Lennie, I fell head over heels for Joe. He had me at bat. bat. bat.

So the bottom line on this book is that I am over the moon about it! I want to shout it from the rooftops! READ THIS BOOK!
