Book Review - Divergent by Veronica Roth (plus a giveaway)

Divergent (Divergent Trilogy)In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Think Fight Club meets The Matrix, all set in post-apocolyptic Chicago.

I tried a few times to write a review of this book without gushing, but I simply can't. I LOVED this book. So much that I might even bring it on vacation with me so I can read it again.

The character development rocked. Beatrice went from being unsure, to scared, to confident in such a natural progression that I never doubted her transformation. Even characters not entirely central to the plot were developed well. As each initiate was introduced, I understood why they chose the faction they did. Even if it was a complete surprise at first.

And speaking of surprises, this book was full of them. There were twists and turns throughout the story, but I never felt cheated, like the twist was a cheap trick to keep me interested. Instead, the reveals made the rest of the story that much more satisfying.

With such an engrossing plot and interesting characters, I can't imagine someone not liking this book. Which is why I'm giving it away to celebrate my blogiversary!
