Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Since this is a blog about writing books for kids, I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge Dr. Seuss's birthday!
Oh, the Places You'll Go! One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (I Can Read It All by Myself) Hop on Pop

Every child grows up reading and watching stories dreamt up by this man. It's been a long time since I sat down and read one of his books, but I still remember some of rhymes. I feel like the words of Seuss are forever emblazoned in my brain.
The Lorax (Classic Seuss) Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories

There are so many books, but I'd have to say my favorite is The Lorax. I know he's not as popular as Horton, or the Grinch, but I still love him for his message.
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.
That's the thing with Dr. Seuss books. At first glance it seems like they're for kids, but really, the books contain valuable lessons we could all benefit from. Not convinced? Here are some others:

  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas: materialism
  • Horton Hears a Who: prejudice
  • Oh, The Places You'll Go: overcoming life's challenges
What's your favorite Seuss book?

  1. I love Green Eggs and Ham (that was one of my favorites from my childhood) and Bartholomew and the Oobleck. I used to read that one when I taught first grade and we made fake oobleck to eat. So much fun!

  2. I love The Lorax, too. It is, by far, my favorite. I posted about Dr. Seuss today, too. I'd also be remiss if I didn't; I used to be a reading specialist.

  3. I have a soft spot for Hop on Pop. I honestly don't think I can pick. I really love The Sneeches and the other stories in that book...the one about the pants that walk by themselves. So awesome.

  5. I teach preschool, so it's been a Dr. Seuss extravaganza of a week! Today we read (and ate) Green Eggs and Ham, but we've also read The Foot Book, ABC, Fox in Socks, The Cat in the Hat, and a few others that no one would believe 3-year-olds would sit through! Dr. Seuss is (was? is.) amazing.
