Other Information: In 2009, a companion novel entitled Love, Stargirl was released.
Summary from Goodreads: Stargirl. From the day she arrives at quiet Mica High in a burst of color and sound, the hallways hum with the murmur of “Stargirl, Stargirl.” She captures Leo Borlock’s heart with just one smile. She sparks a school-spirit revolution with just one cheer. The students of Mica High are enchanted. At first.
Then they turn on her. Stargirl is suddenly shunned for everything that makes her different, and Leo, panicked and desperate with love, urges her to become the very thing that can destroy her: normal.
This book was very short compared to some of the other books I've been reading, but it packed a huge punch. From a writer's point of view, a book like this is a great accomplishment. The author managed to get his point across in under 200 pages, but I don't think any meaning was lost.
Stargirl is a great character. I love how she marches to the beat of her own ukelele and doesn't care what anyone else at the school thinks. Even when everyone turns on her, it's like she doesn't even notice.
Leo is a perfect balance to Stargirl. He is insecure, and, like most teenagers, just wants to fit in with the rest of the crowd. I enjoyed reading about all the conflicting thoughts he had when he began to fall for Stargirl.
Overall, this was another good read. It was a nice depiction of the tug of war with popularity that goes in high school. One day they love you and the next you're chopped liver.
